This aired yesterday on Public Radio Tulsa’s Studio Tulsa. In it, Collin Hinds meditates on the unique urban refuge that is Turkey Mountain, while also touching on the proposed (and, now it seems, doomed) development of the area in to an amusement park. If you run in Tulsa (or walk, or bike) you really owe it to yourself to go explore a little bit of this little piece of public land that, while having its fair share of quirks (like having a water treatment facility on its northeast corner), is absolutely beautiful and we are lucky to have it.There are at least 25 miles of trail packed in to its boundaries, but you can start with well marked trails ranging from 2-5 miles. After you’ve gotten yourself lost a couple of times and found your way back, you realize you can never get more than a couple of miles from where you started but that doesn’t take away from the wonderful feeling of being completely enveloped by trees, rocks, dirt and sky.

Matt is a good friend and occasional training partner, occasional because the schedule of a master’s degree student and a married father of a toddler rarely coincide. Matt has been running since middle school and even ran throughout his service as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ukraine, a place where recreational running is looked upon as a somewhat odd use of one’s free time. Matt has run a few marathons, of which he is modest about his impressive times, and I imagine he will run many more in his lifetime but more than anything he runs for fun, for stress relief, and to feel more alive.
Matt mostly runs from or near his house near downtown Tulsa, which offers access to flat downtown routes, hill runs up Reservoir Hill and the extensive River Parks trail system, though after logging many out and back 15+ mile runs on the trails, he prefers to only use the trail system to link up with more varied routes.
